B.C. Liberals take first riding victory

John Yap projected winner in Richmond-Steveston

The B.C. Liberals have taken the first declared riding in B.C.'s 2009 provincial election, CBC News projects.

With approximately 10 per cent of the polls reporting, Liberal John Yap has taken more than 60 per cent of the vote in the Richmond-Steveston riding.

B.C. New Democrat Sue Wallis won approximately 25 per cent, followed by the Green Party's Jeff Hill with eight per cent and B.C. Conservative Barry Edward Chilton with four per cent.

What it needs to win:

For the referendum to be binding, the approval level must be:

more than 50% of the votes in at least 51 of the province's 85 electoral districts, AND
at least 60% of the total popular vote, province-wide.

If the two thresholds are met, government is required to introduce legislation to implement BC-STV in sufficient time for it to be in place for the May 2013 General Election.
