What it needs to win:
For the referendum to be binding, the approval level must be:
- at least 60% of the total popular vote, province-wide, AND
- more than 50% of the votes in at least 51 of the province's 85 electoral districts.
If the two thresholds are met, government is required to introduce legislation to implement BC-STV in sufficient time for it to be in place for the May 2013 General Election.
Profile
- The largest Vancouver Island riding, it extends from Tweedsmuir in the northeast corner, through Mount Waddington Regional District and Strathcona Regional District to Strathcona Provincial Park and the Pacific Ocean in the south.
- The riding includes Campbell River in the southeast, Alert Bay, Port Hardy, Port Alice, Port McNeil, Sayward and Gold River.
- Port Hardy is the departure point for the BC Ferries Discovery Coast Passage route to Bella Coola.
- North Vancouver Island is one of largest commercial fishing centres on the coast. Salmon is an integral part of the riding, be it commercial or sport fishing.
- There are many native reserves in riding – in the 2006 census, aboriginal population was 13.8%.
Redistribution
- In 2000 redistribution, kept all existing riding and added area from Comox Valley.
- In 2008 redistribution, kept all riding and added 1% from Powell River-Sunshine Coast.
Political History
- North Island: New Democrat Colin Gabelmann won in 1979, 1983, 1986 and 1991. Served as Attorney General; Minister of Government Services; Minister responsible for Sports.
- In 1996, New Democrat Glenn Robertson defeated Liberal Gerry Furney by 1,604 votes.
- In 2001, Liberal Rod Visser defeated Robertson by 7,406 votes.
- In 2005, New Democrat Claire Trevena defeater Visser by 660 votes.

- Independent candidate Vicki Huntington has defeated high profile B.C. Liberal cabinet minister Wally Oppal in the riding of Delta South in one of two provincial election recounts concluded on Tuesday.
