What it needs to win:
For the referendum to be binding, the approval level must be:
- at least 60% of the total popular vote, province-wide, AND
- more than 50% of the votes in at least 51 of the province's 85 electoral districts.
If the two thresholds are met, government is required to introduce legislation to implement BC-STV in sufficient time for it to be in place for the May 2013 General Election.
Profile
- Riding in southeastern part of B.C. now extends north from Kamloops/Trans-Canada Highway/South Thompson River in south to Wells Grey Provincial Park in NW corner of riding.
- Riding includes part of Kamloops (in SE corner), as well as Clearwater, Barriere and heli-skiing resort community of Blue River.
- Yellowhead Highway and North Thompson River separate eastern and western parts of riding.
- Kamloops Airport is in the riding.
- Kamloops IRs 1 and 4, Louis Creek IR4, Nekalliston IR2, North Thompson IR1, Squaam IR2 and Whispering Pines IR4 are also in the riding; aboriginal population was 10% in 2006 census.
Redistribution
- In 1989 redistribution, riding was created from part of Kamloops riding.
- In 2000 redistribution, lost small area to Kamloops; gained areas from Kamloops and Shuswap.
- In 2008 redistribution, KEPT ONLY 53% of riding; added 47% Kamloops riding.
Political History
- Kamloops-North Thompson: In 1991, New Democrat Fred Jackson defeated Liberal John Harwood by 1,149 votes.
- In 1996, Liberal Kevin Krueger defeated Jackson by 368 votes.
- In 2001, Krueger defeated New Democrat Dwayne Hartle by 8,495 votes.
- In 2005, Krueger defeated New Democrat Mike Hanson by 2,013 votes; was appointed Minister of State for Mining on Feb. 7, 2007; was appointed Minister of Small Business and Revenue and Minister responsible for Deregulation on June 23, 2008; was appointed Minister of Community Development on Jan. 19, 2009.
