What it needs to win:
For the referendum to be binding, the approval level must be:
- at least 60% of the total popular vote, province-wide, AND
- more than 50% of the votes in at least 51 of the province's 85 electoral districts.
If the two thresholds are met, government is required to introduce legislation to implement BC-STV in sufficient time for it to be in place for the May 2013 General Election.
Profile
- A primarily residential, affluent riding in the Lower Mainland which includes the part of Delta east of Highway 91 and has Annacis Island as its N.W. boundary. From Annacis Island, it runs along 96 Avenue, which forms the remainder of the northern border; it runs between Highway 91 in the west and 120 Street in the east.
- In 2006 census, immigration population was 33%; 15.5% gave Punjabi as their mother tongue.
- Visible minority population was 40% - 24% South Asian; 8% Chinese.
Redistribution
- Riding created in 1989 redistribution from part of former Delta riding
- In 2000 redistribution, kept 100%; added areas from Delta South and New Westminster.
- No change in 2008 redistribution.
Political History
- In 1991, New Democrat Norm Lortie defeated LiberalMurray MacLeod by 762 votes.
- In 1996, LiberalReni Masi defeated New Democrat Lortie by 648 votes.
- In 2001, LieralMaso again defeated New Democrat Lortie, this time by 8,185 votes.
- In 2005, New Democrat Guy Gentnerdefeated LiberalJeannie Kanakos by 1,001 votes.
