The New Democrats have seen their caucus cut from four to two at the hands of a huge Tory majority, which swept Edmonton in Monday night's election.
The New Democrats held only party leader Brian Mason's riding of Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood along with Edmonton-Strathcona, where Rachael Notley, the daughter of former NDP leader Grant Notley, was elected.
In Edmonton-Beverly-Clareview, another former party leader, Ray Martin, went down to defeat at the hands of the Tories.
The NDP's support slumped from about 10 per cent in the last election to less than nine per cent.
The NDP has been a tiny, but vocal opposition party, claiming to speak for the "average Albertan" left behind by the province's growing prosperity.
The party was the first to call for rent controls to deal with the affordable housing crisis and a ban on campaign contributions from corporations.
The NDP has often found itself with a caucus of two, although it managed to double that showing in the 2004 election, mainly with support from working class areas of Edmonton.
