Improving mental health services for children in rural Alberta is one of goals of $50 million set aside by the province on Friday.
The funding, to be portioned out over three years, is to implement 23 recommendations to improve mental health services for children and youth at risk.
It will:
- Create mobile health teams to provide services in rural and remote areas.
- Establish more in-patient mental health beds for children and youth from northern Alberta.
- Hire more mental health workers for emergency rooms and urgent clinics.
"Without early treatment and support, mental health issues can persist throughout one's life. I am confident this new plan will give Alberta's children and youth the opportunity to live to their full potential," Dr. Raj Sherman, parliamentary assistant to the minister of health and wellness, said in a news release.
