Thousands more Alberta high school students will be eligible for scholarships, the government announced Tuesday.
In the past, students who maintained an 80 per cent average or better though Grades 10, 11 and 12 received $2,500 from the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship program to help pay for college or university.
Now the government has added a second level of the scholarship. Students who maintain between 75 and 79.9 per cent average will receive $1,500.
"Our new investment in the Rutherford Scholarship will assist even more high school students in realizing their dreams of a post-secondary education," said Minister of Advanced Education Doug Horner.
Horner also announced changes to another scholarship program which honours the province's top 10 students graduating from Grade 12 each year. That scholarship will increase from $1,500 to $2,500.
The government said its total support for scholarship programs will increase this year to $69 million from $55 million last year.
About 31,000 students received support in the 2007-2008 school year, the government said.
