Edmonton-Strathcona MLA Rachel Notley won't say how she will deal with a staffer who took part in a Greenpeace protest last Thursday at a fundraising dinner held by Premier Ed Stelmach. (CBC) The NDP MLA for Edmonton-Strathcona, Rachel Notley, is refusing to say how she will deal with a staff member who disrupted a fundraising dinner held by Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach last Thursday night.
Denise Ogonoski was one of two Greenpeace protesters who snuck into Edmonton's Shaw Conference Centre, dropped from the ceiling in harnesses and unfurled a banner that read, "Stelmach: the best premier oil money can buy."
Ogonski works for Notley two days a week in her constituency office and also used to work for Notley's predecessor in the riding, Raj Pannu.
"It was something that I didn't find out about until after she had done it, " said Notley Monday.
Greenpeace protesters dropped from a catwalk to unfurl a banner protesting oilsands development, during a fundraising speech last Thursday by Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach. (CBC) "It's a personnel matter and so it's something I'm going to discuss with her in person and not through the media."
Ogonoski was hustled from the conference room by security guards after the incident along with other Greenpeace protesters and handed a $287 ticket for trespassing.
She has also been banned from the Shaw Conference Centre for five years.
The NDP has been calling for a moratorium on oilsands development, similar to what Greenpeace has been advocating.
