Do Crew Bench Build for Bench Project YYC
Bench Project YYC,( a trio of Calgarians, who shall remain anonymous) builds these benches and then leaves them in spaces where Calgarians can sit, relax and enjoy their surroundings. Since June, twelve benches have been spotted along 4 St S.W. and on 17 Ave S.W.
earlier this month we received this tweet from @benchprojectyyc
"@AngelaKnightCBC @CBCEyeopener we would love to see another batch of benches from the Do Crew! Do you accept our challenge? "
Our answer? Absolutely!
We're ready to build 25 benches for Calgary.
This is our first ever 2 day Do Crew event.
Here's what's happening:
Saturday October 25
9 am - 1pm Saturday - We need 6 volunteers comfortable with wood working tools (chop saw, router, sanders)
10 am - 1pm Saturday - an additional 6 volunteers for painting
Please bring along any painting supplies you might have.
Trays, small rollers, brushes, drop clothes etc.
Sunday October 26
1pm - 5pm
We need 10 volunteers to help assemble the benches and do the
final paint touch ups and stenciling.
cordless drills are also welcome.
We'll be working out of the Golden Age Club in the East Village both days.
The address is 610 8 Ave SE.
The club has a wood working shop complete with almost everything we need.
We are couple of routers short so if you have one please lug it along with you.
Oh and after the benches are finished we need to find them homes.
Let us know where you think they should go.
send us a tweet @cbcdocrew and suggest a location.
We'd love to see benches all over the city.
We could not do this build without some pretty fabulous community partners;
Aaron Stayner from Timbertown N.E. for donating all of the building materials.
Greg Stebbe from Walls Alive on 17 Ave S.W. donating all of the paint
Wendy Lees and The Golden Age Club of Calgary for the use their facility & wood working shop.
Bench Project YYC for being awesome and sharing their idea.
Thank you all for your support!
If you're interested in volunteering please send me an email.
See you in the woodshop!
Impromtu Do Crew - August 22 Side Walk Library Build
Thanks to all who responded to my desperate cry for volunteers & cordless drills this morning!
We had a great turnout for our impromtu Do Crew sidewalk library build.
We built 10 libraries in under 90 minutes right here in the radio/current affairs
area of the CBC Calgary.
The libraries are off to new homes tomorrow.
Here's where they are going....
Back in June, the Calgary Eyeopener teamed up with the Federation of Calgary Communities to host the "Community by the Book Side Walk Library" contest.
The winning entry was from a group of kids from the Beltline West Connaught
Residents Association. The prize? Their very own side walk library, filled with books to get them started AND a pop up community party.
Saturday August 23 is the big day. We're hosting a bbq and side walk library installation for the winners. Seven other contest finalists will receive side walk libraries as well. Representatives from the communities of Auburn Bay, Calgary Marlborough, Erlton, Mackenzie Towne, Triwood, Tuxedo Park and Winston Heights Mountview will be picking up the libraries we built during our blitz today.
This was truly a community collaboration.
We couldn't have done it without the following:
for donating & building the winner's sidewalk library.
And to Kirsten Horel for the fabulous paint job.
Kathryn Audet at the Beacon Hills Home Depot
for donating all of the supplies for our 7 finalist libraries
Calgary Co-op Foundation
for donating all of the food & refreshments for our pop up party
Higher Ground Coffee in Kensington
for providing the Do Crew with their morning brew.
St Stephen's Church
for providing us with tables & a basement back up plan
if Mother Nature turns on us.
Leslie, Stephanie & Rebecca from
The Federation of Calgary Community Associations
for be willing to just "wing it" with us.
Rob & Cheri Macaulay
for their excellent side walk library knowledge & supervisory skills
Johnny from the CBC Do Crew
for picking up the donated wood & supplies and making
each and every cut perfect so assembly was a breeze.
Our incredible CBC Do Crew volunteers!
See you all at the party!

Time: 8am - noon
This is the third of three volunteer missions for Wood's Homes. To celebrate Wood's 100th anniversary the CBC Do Crew pledged to volunteer one hundred hours to the children's charitable organisation.
The Youth Culinary Arts Program is a program that Wood's Homes provides for youth aged sixteen to twenty four. It gives youth an opportunity to work in a commercial kitchen developing life skills along with their knife skills. Staff also prepare students for job interviews in the food service industry. One of the things working against these students is the lack of proper work attire. In particular, black slacks and white collared shirts.
Our next CBC Do Crew mission is a Black & White Clothing Drive. We're looking for new or gently used black slacks and white collared shirts for both men and women. Adult sizes please. Black shoes are also greatly appreciated.
We'll accept donations in the CBC Lobby, 1724 Westmount Blvd NW until noon on Wednesday August 27.
Then on Thursday, August 28, we head over to Wood's Parkdale Campus and sort the donations. If you're interested in helping sort please send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org

The shelter itself remains the cornerstone of the agency. With so many people relying on the facility, keeping the shelter in good condition is an ongoing project for CWES.
Our next CBC Do Crew mission is a paint job. A big one. We're painting eleven rooms at the shelter. As an ambassador for the shelter's Take a Stand Against Family Violence campaign I'm asking you to take a stand with me by volunteering to help paint on May 15th. I need 33 volunteers (men & women) from 9am - 1pm.
We're painting so it always gets a little messy, please wear your best painting gear. All of the paint has been donated but we could use supplies. If you have extra rollers, handles, trays, tape, stepladders, etc. please bring them along.

CBC Socks for the Homeless Drive & Do Crew Sock Hop
What: Do Crew Sock Hop
When : Friday March 28, 2014
Where: CBC Calgary - 1724 Westmount Blvd NW
Time: 7am - 10am
We may not give our socks a second thought, but they are always top of mind for Calgary's homeless population. A homeless person can walk several kilometres every day. Clean dry socks are vital to maintaining healthy feet and preventing frostbite and diseases like diabetes. Socks are needed all year round at both the Calgary Drop In Centre and The Salvation Army Centre of Hope.
Rob, one of our listeners, came up with the idea of gathering up "orphan" socks (you know the ones whose mates went missing in the dryer) and donating them to both shelters. So here's the plan:
We're collecting your gently used clean single socks to help keep Calgary's homeless on their feet. New pairs of socks are also welcome. Drop off your socks here at CBC Calgary, 1724 Westmount Blvd NW until Wednesday March 26th.
After that the CBC Do Crew takes over. Friday March 28th we're hosting a Sock Hop here at our studios. We'll make sure those single socks finally meet their match. I need 10 volunteers to help match socks from 7am - 10am. If you're interested please send me an email at email@example.com
Here's the radio doc that inspired Rob. It ran on The Sunday Edition with Michael Enright
Thanks for your help. And your socks!

I can use as many volunteers as possible. We're outside so it's bound to be chilly. Wear layers and (shudder) sensible shoes. If you have any extra supplies like outdoor lights, decorations, wreath hangers, light hangers, duct tape & small step ladders please bring them along.
Breakfast served starting at 8am - The decorating blitz begins at 9am

Coat Flash Mob - for the Drop In Centre
When : Tuesday November 12th
Where: CBC Calgary - 1724 Westmount Blvd NW
Time: 9am ish
We've been collecting coats & warm winter wear for the Calgary Drop In Centre. The flood this summer wiped out their supply of winter coats. So far about 4,500 coats have filled our our lobby (and offices & studios!) We continue to take donations until 11pm, Tuesday Nov 12.
Tippet Richardson has donated a moving van to deliver the coats to the D.I.
The van will be here at CBC tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov 12) morning. Our CBC staff will be loading the coats into the van and we sure could use a little extra man/woman power. If you're in the neighbourhood around 9am please come by. No need to sign up - just jump in and join our Coat Flash Mob. With enough hands we should be able to fill the van in 45 minutes to an hour.
A heartfelt Thank You! to everyone who has donated to our D.I. Coat Drive. You are amazing.
Hope to see you at our Coat Flash Mob!
