Carless in Calgary

This afternoon on CBC radio

Friday, May 1, 2009

Listen to The Homestretch this afternoon (1010 Am, 99.1FM) to hear about a Calgary couple, Taryn Montgomery and Richard Larson, who are joining me in carlessness.

I put the call out a few weeks past on the Carless in Calgary blog and on Facebook and Twitter.

I was trying to find people to take a carless challenge. Taryn emailed me and said she and her husband Richard were willing to take on the challenge. (Much to his shagrin.)

Taryn is a lawyer. She works downtown. Richard teaches elementary school in Lakeview. They live in Brentwood.

They've agreed to go carless, beginning today, for two weeks

Tune to The Homestrech in this afternoon as I chat with them to find out the whys, whats, and how comes.

Unlike Mr. Boss, proud carless man of only a few months, I did not have a car until I was 30. I am now 53, and have been carless in Calgary since I moved here in late 2006.

Let me give you an example of what carless in Calgary means: how do I take advantage of your booksale in support of literacy? I bike to wherever the arena is, providing I can figure out the bike route map, which fades out the names of streets so that you can see better where the routes are....????(what good is a route when you dont' know which street it's on?), and I can take my backpack and cash with me - but how many books can I carry home again? How many trips will I have to make on my bike? Probably I will not partake of your booksale, much as I would love to. How much time do I have in my day - I also have to get groceries, which, thank god now that I can bike again will probably only take 45 min to an hour rather than the min. of 1 1/2 hours when I walked there, and took the bus home, in the frigid winter for which I don't have the clothing or guts to bike. I will add that I have been carless in Ottawa, Toronto, Halifax, periodically in Calgary, New York City, and Calgary is absolutely the worst city in which to be carless. I hate it.

This summer our family is celebrating 20 years carfree in Calgary. Congratulations on these stories. Now, can we get a bike path update on every traffic reporting the the morning?
