Carless in Calgary

Carlessness has its Effect

Monday, April 20, 2009

We had some running around to do: a (big) grocery shopping trip, the dump, the hardware store, etc. Usually I get the car on a Friday morning ….

They’ll pick me up from home at 7:30 AM to get the rental car. I’ll return it on Monday morning and they’ll drop me at work. It’s all good.

So this morning as the driver chats to me while driving along the Bow River on the way to the CBC, I see bikes on the trails, and joggers, and walkers and I’m like … damn. I don’t want to be in this car. I want to be on my bike, taking part in this sparkling day.

This is different than before. Being carless has made me appreciate the serenity of the morning walk or bike. Being driven, or driving, is a different animal.

It seems carlessness is working well.
