Carless in Calgary

Did you ever…

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Did you ever find yourself waking up in the wee hours of the morning because you have a thing or two on your mind and you can’t get back to sleep so you get up and make a pot of coffee, turn on your computer and begin to work?

That’s what happened to me this morning. (It’s actually been happening a lot, lately. C’est la vie.)

So although the weather is perfect and inviting I chose not to ride the bike because my head is swimming in a pool of sleeplessness. Groggy. Blurry eyed. I didn’t want to ride in traffic with impaired reactions. So I took the train and walked and all was cool.

I wonder what I would have done if I had a car, but not for long. Without a doubt I would have driven, rationalizing that “I’m far too tired to walk or bike.” And I wonder how many other people are behind the wheel on a few hours of sleep? And I wonder what that says about safety, accidents, awareness, and societal tolerance?

I wonder.
