Vivian Clift is born and bred in St. John's, Newfoundland, Jackson Lewis is stationed in the city during the Second World War. When Vivian falls madly in love with Lewis her parents strongly disapprove. The two marry despite the misgivings of Vivian's family. But when Jackson takes Vivian back to his hometown of Windsor, Ontario, she begins to realize that her family may have been right.
