Shakespeare Selfie: Mercutio cruises the beach
Until May 9th we want your Shakespeare Selfies. Take a Shakespearian character, drop him or her in present day times, and write a new or monologue for that character. You could win some great prizes!
In today's pick from our youth category (12-18 years), Michael Thiel has our man Mercutio looking for love on the beach.
"Bird-watching on a beach" by Michael Thiel
Oh, my! That blonde lifeguard I was watching left her chair! I suppose I could examine other beauties, but I have a better idea—swimming in the ocean by myself. It will keep the sun from scorching my fine form!
*Dips foot in*
Oh, it is so icy! I better retreat to my bird-watching post and see if I can find any chicks.
*Takes a good look around the beach*
Ahh, I see some fine ladies lying down over there! Could it be that the sands of time have chosen this beach for me to become part of a couple? I better introduce myself to these fine ladies? But what if they deny my request? Oh, you handsome devil, no time for regrets now! Just go and ask them! It may even be worth giving up your silly bachelor pad for an apartment!
*Talks to them*
They ALL denied my request? I think I am starting to lose my touch! Maybe it is hopeless. I may have to make a sandcastle with a moat full of tears! But although my tears may sink through, I shall never give up! I will eventually find someone who finds me irresistible! Say, that lifeguard is coming back! I suppose I have nothing better to do than that! I may drown in sorrow if these tears keep up, after all.
