Defining Moments

Donovan Bailey chooses Defining Moments winner

Track and field legend Donovan Bailey knows a thing or two about Defining Moments—those times in all of our lives that present us with seemingly insurmountable challenges and that end up teaching us valuable lessons about what we can overcome.

We asked him to pick his favourite story from the top 12 stories in our Defining Moments challenge (as determined by public voting). And the winner is…

A New Life” by Corrie Adams

Donovan had this to say about the story: “I admire Corrie’s ability to free herself, love herself, make the right decision no matter how painful, and not look back.”

Congratulations Corrie!

Did you know right away what your Defining Moment was?
It came to me pretty immediately. Sometimes you have the thought that if I hadn't made that one decision—how different would my life be.

How did it feel to tell that story?
My closest friends and family are familiar with my history, my husband too. What was so exciting and moving to me was the feedback from friends and family but also people who didn't know me.  It was a really a positive experience.

Honourable mention

Donovan was also extremely impressed by 12-year-old Ellie Willock’s story Shift and has decided to give her an honourable mention.

Said Donovan: “Ellie decided that her personal goals as an athlete were lost, but found even more power in passing it on to the next generation. True leadership.”

Congratulations Ellie! Keep on writing!

Thanks to everyone who participated in our Defining Moments storytelling map. We were truly inspired by your stories.
