"Defining Moments": An Olympics-inspired story map

For Chris Hadfield, it was looking up at the moon. For Elvis Stojko, it was making a career U-turn. Inspired by the life-changing moments we'll soon be watching unfold at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, we bring you Defining Moments: a literal storytelling map of Canada.

What’s your defining moment? What was that one experience that forever changed you, that set your true course in life and made you who you are? What did it take to follow your dream?

Head to cbc.ca/definingmoments to check out our interactive storytelling map of Canada, where you can read stories from Canadian celebs like Shaun Majumder, Joannie Rochette, Maestro Kent Nagano, Anthony Calvillo, Chris Hadfield, Lisa Ray and Craig Kielburger, as well as members of Team Canada.

A national writing competition with an awesome prize

We want your story on the map. Tell us about that defining moment in your life. Was it your first love? A crushing defeat? A truth you learned the hard way? Here's how:

  • Head to cbc.ca/definingmoments and tell your story. Stories must be between 200 and 500 words. Include a photo.
  • Share your story with your friends, your family, everyone you know. Why? At the end of the submission period, the 12 stories that have received the most public votes will go to a celebrity judge, who will pick a winner. The prize: an awesome tablet that you can use to write your next great story on.
  • Submit early. The earlier you submit, the longer your story will be on cbc.ca/definingmoments—meaning you've maximized your chance of getting lots of votes.

We all have moments that make us who we are. What's yours? You have until February 23 to put your Defining Moment on the map.

To encourage thoughtful and respectful conversations, first and last names will appear with each submission to CBC/Radio-Canada's online communities (except in children and youth-oriented communities). Pseudonyms will no longer be permitted.
