Coach's Corner: Roy MacGregor
To inspire you as you compete in the Canada Writes Literary Triathlon, we're running writing tips on the art of sports writing all week. From the sports columnist and author of the Screech Owls series: write about the athlete, not the sport.

"Don't get caught up in statistics or the technical side. The most important subject in any sports story is the subject himself or herself. Tell her or his story, and the sport involved will naturally and effortlessly join in."
Roy MacGregor is the bestselling author of Home Team: Fathers, Sons, and Hockey (shortlisted for the Governor General's Award), Northern Light, and Canadians. He's also the author of the wildly popular Screech Owls series for kids. Currently, he is a regular columnist for the Globe and Mail. His journalism has earned him four National Magazine Awards and eight National Newspaper Awards. He lives in Ottawa.
