Geist to pick workshop winners

The deadline has passed for you to send in your excerpts to the CBC Short Story Workshop. Now it's time to pick the five lucky writers whose stories will be workshopped by David Bergen.

We've enlisted Geist magazine to help make the selection. Geist is an intelligent, plain-talking, inclusive and offbeat magazine of ideas and culture. Each issue contains a mix of fiction, nonfiction, photography, comix, reviews, little-known facts of interest, poetry and goofy Geist maps. In their 21 years they've published more than 1,400 writers as well as original work by Evelyn Lau, Alberto Manguel and Sheila Heti (to name just a few). We're happy to have them make this tough decision.

Geist has also agreed to give a one-year membership to one participant. We will be announcing the winner on our Facebook page tomorrow.

All entries will now be rendered anonymous and sent to Geist's offices to be evaluated. Selected participants will be contacted by the Canada Writes team on Thursday, September 22.

If your work is not selected, we still invite you to follow along. The CBC Short Story Workshop will take place on our website from October 3-14. David Bergen will be offering comments on the works, as well as blogging and offering some inspiration for those getting their stories ready for the Short Story Prize deadline (November 1st).

And, as a side note, you might also want to consider taking part in Geist's 8th Annual Literal Literary Postcard Story Contest (deadline: January 15, 2012). More details are available at geist.com.

Thanks to all who participated! Stay tuned!
