Writing Tips

From Lee Maracle:

Subway Stories

I am never not making up stories: I watch people on the transit, look at the lines of their faces, see how they sit, check out what they wear, what they are carrying, how they decline to engage others, or how they interact and begin to imagine what they do for a living, what happened to them that day, create a crazy situation in my mind and try to predict how they would react. Pretty soon, I have a story of some old homeless person coming on the street car, screaming for a seat.
Lee Maracle is a Canadian First Nations poet, novelist and playwright. She was a Creative Nonfiction juror in 2008.
