Listen to Jane Urquhart read from Away

Each day this week, CBC Books will present a reading from one of the Canada Reads 2013 contenders. Today's clip is from Jane Urquhart, reading from Away. Biographer and historian Charlotte Gray is defending Away during the Canada Reads debates February 11-14.

In this clip (runs 6:14), Jane Urquhart describes the maternal line of the O'Malley family and their mythology. Esther, the last of the O'Malley women, is now an old woman, living in the family home on Lake Ontario. She recalls the story of Mary O'Malley, her great-grandmother, who was living on an island off the coast of Ireland in 1842. That's when everything changed.
