Exploring The Best Laid Plans: Chapter 19

bestlaidplans.jpg

CBC Books is about conversation and community, which is why we want to explore the Canada Reads 2011 champion, The Best Laid Plans, chapter by chapter. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday we will release an audio version of one chapter (generously recorded and given to us by author Terry Fallis) as well as pose discussion questions. You can join the conversation by commenting on the blog posts right here on the Canada Reads site or by joining the discussion group for The Best Laid Plans in the CBC Books Community.

The set-up: In chapter 19, the snowstorm makes for unfavourable travel conditions in Ottawa. With hardly anyone in the House, the Tories take this opportunity to make a power play. But Angus has a few tricks up his own sleeve.

The questions:

  1. Given what happens in the course of the narrative, what do you think Terry Fallis is saying about the political system in Canada?
  2. The Tories called the vote early, which was allowed under the rules but not strictly fair. What do you think about this strategy?
  3. Not all of the characters were fully explored in the book. Which of the secondary characters would you have liked to hear more about?ion
  4. What was your favourite part of the story? Your least favourite?
  5. If Angus were running in the current federal election, would you vote for him? Why or why not?
