Though Jane Austen's books were originally published anonymously, few writers can claim the same lasting power and significance her novels had have across two centuries. The world of 19th-century English women encapsulated in her books — rife with wit, social criticism and ahead-of-their-time women — remains compelling to readers around the world in 2017. 

July 18, 2017 marks the bicentenary of Austen's death. She died in Winchester, England at the age of 41, after suffering with what is now known as Addison's disease. 

To mark this day, we've plucked quotations from Pride & Prejudice, Emma, Northanger Abbey, Sense & SensibilityMansfield Park and Persuasion.
