Your CBC Short Story Prize writing tip of the week

We post a writing tip each week on CBC Books. This week's tip is from author Carmen Aguirre.

Cut, cut, cut. Always take the work seriously. Never take yourself seriously. The first is imperative. The second is disastrous. You must be ruthless and specific. If the nagging question 'Why would anybody care about my story?' creeps to the surface, remember that it is about a universal experience, not personal catharsis.

This writing tip is from Carmen Aguirre, a Vancouver-based writer and theatre artist. Her memoir Something Fierce won Canada Reads in 2012.
