15 books to read for Indigenous Book Club Month

In tandem with Aboriginal History Month, which is celebrated throughout June, Indigenous and Northern Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett is urging Canadians to read books by Indigenous authors.

"I'm hoping all Canadians will join me in marking the month of June as Indigenous Book Club Month," said Bennett in a YouTube video.

"You'll help increase awareness and understanding through shared culture and encourage steps towards reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Reconciliation has to be a journey for all Canadians."

In the video, Bennett recommends reading Canada Reads 2016 finalist Birdie by Tracey Lindberg, as well as work by award-winning poet Marilyn Dumont (The Pemmican Eaters).

The minister also encourages Canadians to share their reading picks on social media with the hashtag #IndigenousReads.
