Wab Kinew returns to host Canada Reads 2016

UPDATE - Feb. 2, 2016: Wab Kinew will not return as host of Canada Reads in 2016. We thank Wab Kinew for his contribution to Canada Reads, both as our winner in 2014 and our host in 2015. We wish him all the best, and we'll announce a new host for Canada Reads 2016 soon.

Wab Kinew, author of the national bestseller The Reason You Walk, will return to host Canada Reads for the second year in a row.

"I'm really happy to be back as host for this year's Canada Reads. It's a great opportunity to celebrate great Canadian writing in a way that engages a lot of people," said Kinew in a statement.

Since hosting Canada Reads 2015, Kinew has published a memoir, The Reason You Walk, which has been longlisted for the RBC Taylor Prize.

Kinew won Canada Reads 2014 as the champion of The Orenda by Joseph Boyden. He first blew audiences away with his opening defence, a passionate spoken word rap about Canada's relationship with First Nations, Inuit and Métis people (below).

On Wednesday, Kinew will join q host Shad to announce the 2016 Canada Reads theme and longlist. Panelists and a shortlist will be announced on January 20. Canada Reads 2016 will air from March 21 to March 24, 2016.

Cameron Bailey, the artistic director of the Toronto International Film Festival, won Canada Reads 2015 with his defense of Ru by Kim Thúy.
