First Generation Films has optioned the rights to turn Jeff Lemire's award-winning graphic novel series, Essex County, into a television series to air on CBC-TV.

The pilot will be written by Aaron Martin, who has previously worked on CBC's Being Erica and CTV's Degrassi: The Next Generation.

Essex County is an intensely emotional trilogy about the lives, deaths and dreams of residents in an eccentric farming community in southwestern Ontario. Lemire won the Joe Schuster Award for Outstanding Canadian Comic Book Cartoonist in 2008 and the Doug Wright Award for Best Emerging Talent in 2008 for the graphic novel. Essex County was also a finalist for Canada Reads 2011.

"Essex County is a vivid and haunting book that has inspired a dedicated and distinguished following. We are thrilled Jeff has agreed to collaborate with FGF to bring his vision to the screen," said First Generation Films President Christina Piovesan in a press release.
