EXCERPT

The clatter of the evening trams echoes through the streets. The big yellow Holiday Inn, where all the international journalists stayed during the siege, has been given a facelift but the scars of sniper fire have been hastily cauterized. The asphalt is full of hollows. The 1984 Olympic bobsled track sits high in the mountains, entire sections pulverized, its rubble cascading through the forest.
