UPDATE: The assault charge against Jennifer McCarthy was dismissed without prejudice by the Santa Fe Magistrate Court in March of 2014. In July, the court granted a motion ordering for the case to be dismissed with prejudice.

McCarthy released the following statement:

"My call to 911 obviously de-escalated the situation and at that point I thought the matter was resolved and did not require further law enforcement attention. Consequently, I tried to protect Mr. Paleologo and minimized the attack to the officer.

At no time did I point a gun at Mr. Paleologo. At no time did I place a gun or any weapon anywhere in my body.

Unfortunately, Mark's preposterous version of events was repeated in the complaint and resulted in my arrest."

EARLIER: You know how they say life is often stranger than fiction?

The ex-wife of Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Cormac McCarthy was arrested by New Mexico police following a bizarre incident in which she allegedly pointed a handgun at her boyfriend ... that she pulled from her vagina.

jennifermccarty-county-jail-200.jpgAccording to documents released by the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, and obtained by the Smoking Gun website, Jennifer McCarthy's boyfriend told police that the couple had an argument over space aliens last Saturday morning. McCarthy, who divorced her author husband in 2006, left the house for a time, but returned and went into the bedroom. The boyfriend said the 48-year-old McCarthy then appeared before him wearing lingerie and had "a silver hand gun in her vagina."

McCarthy allegedly used the gun as a sex toy before she pulled the weapon from her, uh, delicate regions and pointed it at his head. The boyfriend said he grabbed the gun from her and eventually disposed of it in a trash can outside, where an arresting officer retrieved after arriving at the home, the documents state.

McCarthy was charged with aggravated assault on a household member and released on $5,000 bail.

The Smoking Gun reports that Jennifer McCarthy married Cormac McCarthy, author of several bestselling books including No Country for Old Men, in Nevada in the late 1990s. The two have a teenage son.
