The year of the Great Gatsby bonanza

It took years to make but after much anticipation, but Baz Luhrmann's lavishly produced Great Gatsby adaptation finally hit theatres. Despite getting mixed reviews, the movie was enough to propel the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald back into the popular zeitgeist, officially giving people Gatsby fever.

Thumbnail image for gatsby-originalcover.jpgThe movie inspired many Gatsby-esque costume parties, epic reading parties and even a line of make up. Movie critics weren't too jazzed on the actual movie but there's something about the Gatsby mythology that seems to resonate with a 2013 audience. According to literature experts, it's probably due to the fact that it explores the darker side to the American Dream -- an idea that is still very much alive in the 21st century.

The Great Gatsby is also a story about morality in a time of greed and excess, which is another theme that a modern audience can connect to. The movie may vanish into obscurity but the Gatsby legend will live on for many years to come.
