Beatles drummer Ringo Starr will release a previously unheard version of his song Octopus's Garden as part of his upcoming children's book based on his popular tune, according to a recent post on his Facebook page. The book, set to be published by Simon & Schuster in October, is being reimagined as an illustrated book.
But what can we expect with imaginative lyrics like "warm below the storm / In our little hideaway beneath the waves / Resting our head on the sea bed / In an octopus's garden near a cave?"
Apparently, the illustrated book will follow five children as they have an aquatic adventure in a garden hosted by a genial cephalopod who offers them undersea rides on turtles, plays with them in a submerged city, and protects them from a storm in its cave.
This got the CBC Books team thinking about what other classic pop songs could be reimagined as entertaining children's books. Here's our Top 5 list.
Rock Lobster by the B-52s
Sample lyric: "We were at the beach / Everybody had matching towels / Somebody went under a dock / And there they saw a rock / It wasn't a rock / Was a rock lobster"
Could feature: A quiet, misunderstood young lobster tries to get invited to a beach party with the popular kids, but comes to learn the value of being an individual!
Rock 'n' Roll High School by Ramones
Sample lyric: "Well the girls out there knock me out, you know / Rock, rock, rock 'n' roll high school / Cruisin' around in my GTO / Rock, rock, rock'n'roll high school"
Could feature: Kids go to a seemingly normal high school but all the teachers play different instruments and everything is in song, which pretty much makes it the best high school ever.
Hungry Like the Wolf by Duran Duran
Sample lyric: "In touch with the ground / I'm on the hunt I'm after you / Smell like I sound I'm lost in a crowd / And I'm hungry like the wolf"
Could feature: There is a wolf in the forest who really loves blueberry pie. One day he catches the scent of a bakery in the crowded city and wanders in to hunt for his favourite treat, getting into misadventures along the way.
Heroes by David Bowie
Sample lyric: "I, I will be king / And you, you will be queen / Though nothing will drive them away / We can beat them, just for one day / We can be heroes, just for one day"
Could feature: A bunch of comic-book-loving kids get the chance to become superheroes for one day, and spend the day helping the world by putting out forest fires, turning away alien invasions and saving dolphins trapped in fishing nets.
