Today marks 105 years of Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables. Although the book was originally rejected five times before finally being picked up by a publishing house in Boston, once it was released it achieved widespread success almost immediately. It sold 19,000 copies in the first five months. The first translation -- in Swedish -- followed in 1909.
Since then, the story of the plucky and imaginative young orphan has won the hearts of people across the world. Anne is an international name and hero, especially in Japan, Korea and Poland, with thousands of tourists flocking to Prince Edward Island every year to see the inspiration for the book. The story of Anne of Green Gables has been translated into musicals, stage plays, movies and even a Japanese animé.
