When a book is adapted to the big screen, a movie tie-in edition is inevitable. And literary purists almost always hate movie tie-in covers. But when the book's original cover is as iconic as The Great Gatsby's, the backlash is intense.
When Scribner released a new edition (above right) of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel featuring cast members from Baz Luhrmann's hyped up new movie adaptation, fans of the original were none too pleased. But the truth is, in the 85+ years since Gatsby was first published, there have been plenty of editions with covers that depart from Francis Cugat's original artwork Celestial Eyes (an image that Fitzgerald liked so much he actually wrote it into his novel).
