Jason Collins made history this week by becoming the first active player in one of the major four professional sports leagues -- NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL -- to publicly announce that he is gay. The revelation was one of the buzziest stories online, giving Sports Illustrated's website their highest traffic day ever.
Collins's announcement was made with an eloquent, thoughtful first-person article, published in Sports Illustrated and online, which had many people wondering not if, but when, the twelve-year NBA veteran (he mostly recently played with the Boston Celtics and the Washington Wizards) going to sign a book deal.
Until that happens, we've put together a list of the Top 5 sports memoirs of publicly out athletes -- books that, we hope, will give readers a better understanding the the struggles gay athletes face and why Collins's coming out was so important.
