Glee star Chris Colfer has made many childhood dreams come true in recent years, but this week he achieved another with the publication of his first novel.
The 22-year-old singer, dancer and actor has written a children's fairy tale with a twist. In The Land of Stories
, twins Connor and Alex find themselves sucked into their favourite book of fairy tales, and plunge into adventures with the characters they grew up reading about.
The idea for the story had been percolating in his mind since he was a child himself, Colfer told the Associated Press recently.
"I used to ask, 'Mommy, who's the man in the mirror? Why's he talking to the evil queen? Why's she so evil? Why does she hate Snow White so much?'
"I just tried to clarify the questions that I had as a kid," he said.
Colfer has always loved literature and said his favourite childhood memories are of going to the bookstore at midnight to pick up the latest Harry Potter books. He used what free time he had during last summer's Glee world tour to work on his book, he said.
"I was writing constantly in my hotel room and under the stage during performances, even. I'd be singing I Want to Hold Your Hand
and I'd think of something really witty for Connor to say. Had to run downstairs to the changing booth, type it into my computer, run off a

in a leotard. It was an interesting summer. I don't think I've mentally recovered from that time."
And if he could get one if his Hollywood friends to appear in an adaptation of his new novel, who would he reach out to?
"I think ultimately I would love to see Meryl Streep play every role just because I think who would not want to go see that movie? Who would not want to go see Meryl Streep playing the Big Bad Wolf or Red Riding Hood? I mean, it would be great."-With files from The Associated Press
