A slice of Life of Pi

It was a film adaptation that some readers thought couldn't be made, but director Ang Lee's interpretation of Canadian novelist Yann Martel's critically acclaimed Life of Pi is preparing to hit theatres.

The first trailer was released this week and the film looks to feature some dazzling special effects to bring the survival story of Pi Patel, a young boy lost at sea in a lifeboat full of animals, to the big screen. You can watch the trailer below. Doesn't that Bengal tiger look pretty cool?

The wildly imaginative fantasy novel was published in 2001 and won Martel the prestigious Man Booker Prize in 2002.

The film is set to be released Nov. 21.
