Some colouring books are just designed for fun. Others try to sneak a little learning between the lines. And then there's this, a newly published colouring book for kids about 9/11.
According to Its publisher, Wayne Bell of Really Big Coloring Books, We Shall Never Forget 9/11: The Kids' Book of Freedom "is designed to be a tool that parents can use to help teach children about the facts surrounding 9/11... The book does not shy away from the truth."
Husna Haq disagrees. The Christian Science Monitor contributor (who is Muslim) says that this book goes way out of line in depicting Muslims as freedom-hating fanatical terrorists. And when one page reads "Children, the truth is, these terrorist acts were done by freedom-hating radical Islamic Muslim extremists. These crazy people hate the American way of life because we are FREE and our society is FREE" while depicting an American soldier shooting bin Laden while he hides behind a veiled woman, it's easy to see why.
"It's pretty incredible to think that little kids are looking at this and colouring this," Haq told CBC correspondent Jim Brown on a recent episode of As It Happens. "I find this colouring book disgusting. Ever since 9/11...there's been a deliberate, manufactured movement against Muslims."
Haq argues that this colouring book is an extension of this Muslim-hating culture, and the fact it is aimed at young children makes its existence "particularly disgusting." He says its publication marks a "new low" for American culture.
Despite this, the book, which retails for $6.99, has sold out its first print run of 10,000 copies.
