This summer, CBC unleashed its adventurous side with the digital show Extreme Canada, hosted by Paul Karchut. Every week this summer, Paul has been introducing listeners to a different obscure, extreme sport. Adventurers couldn't ask for a better guide, as Paul has decades of extreme adventuring under his belt: in his twenties, he was a sponsored extreme skier, and he has travelled to the Canadian Arctic on an off-road motorbike. In his spare time, he enjoys an occasional ultra-marathon.
We wondered if Paul was as adventurous in his reading habits, so we asked him to recommend a great summer read for travellers who like their adventures armchair style. Paul chose South: The Endurance Expedition by Ernest Shackleton. Here's why:
Days after high school graduation, I hit the road for a coast-to-coast solo bicycle trip. While friends and family met me at "mile zero" of the Trans Canada Highway, one of my cousins tucked South: The Endurance Expedition by Ernest Shackleton into my panniers. It's a first-person account of Shackleton's failed expedition to the South Pole in 1914. Shifting sea ice crushed Shackleton's ship, the Endurance, and forced his crew into a harrowing battle to survive in one of the earth's most vicious environments. On those days when I was robbed or hailed on or fought through a vicious headwind, I would think of Shackleton's incredible journey and how my little jaunt across the country was pretty small potatoes. Since then, his strength of character in the most extreme of circumstances has stayed with me on my trips into the Canadian Arctic, the South American Andes and the Japanese Alps. This is an inspiring read for the young (or old) adventurer in your family.
If you are more than an armchair adventurer, Extreme Canada is having an exciting contest. Submit a photo or video of you enjoying the great outdoors for a chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree from Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) and weekly prizes. But hurry, the contest closes on August 25, 2011. Find all the details here.
