Avid readers are a twisted bunch. I know, for I am one of them. I confess to being a childhood torturer and murderer of one of God's innocent creatures.
As a young boy, I eagerly read about the wonders of science. Then, on a fateful day, I read about a magnifying glass, and how it could focus the sun's light to burn things. Well, how hot could the warm rays of the sun really get? I wondered.
So I got out my toy magnifying glass and went out into the bright sunshine. As I held the magnifying glass to the sun and put my hand under it, I was shocked at how hot the sun's rays became.
Then, through the corner of my eye, I saw an ant. A strange and uncontrollable curiosity drew me to that little ant. I focused the burning light on the ant which tried to run away, but I kept the light focused - always focused - on the innocent victim. Very soon I saw smoke coming up from a smouldering hole on the ant's back. The horrible smoke reached my nose, but now I had to finish the job to save the ant from any more suffering. I kept the sunlight focused on the ant until the little victim shrivelled up.
My curiosity and knowledge had led me first to torture and then to murder. Mothers, do not twist the minds of your sons - by making them read too much!
