In a bold step into the digital future, CBC Books has partnered with McArthur & Company to create a multi-faceted digital e-book of Kate Pullinger's award-winning novel, The Mistress of Nothing
The e-book takes advantage of the many exciting technical possibilities in digital publishing. It includes CBC's abridged audio reading of the novel, read in 25 parts by actress Barbara Barnes. The e-book also includes exclusive features such as a slide show of photographs, prints and paintings from the the novel's historical setting (1860s Egypt), a book club reading guide, six exclusive videos of the author discussing the process of researching and writing the book, further reading suggestions and a reading of the final chapter by Kate Pullinger herself.
The idea for the partnership was born out of CBC Radio's Between the Covers
, a book-reading program featuring novels and short stories read in 15-minute instalments. The Mistress of Nothing
won the Governor General's Award for fiction in 2009. CBC bought the audio rights in early 2010. The enhanced e-book will be available from the iBookstore and Amazon's Kindle store. CBC is working to partner on other books and with other publishers to make its readings available in digital editions.
