Saskatchewan author Arthur Slade was awarded the TD Canadian Children's Literature Award Tuesday night for his book, The Hunchback Assignments.

Established in 2005, the TD Canadian Children's Literature Award honours the most distinguished book of the year for children aged 1 to 12. It is this country's most prestigious literary award for children's literature and carries a monetary value of $25,000.

The Hunchback Assignments is described as a "steampunk thriller" set in the alleyways and sewers of Victorian London. It introduces the character of Modo, a hunchback teenager with the peculiar ability to alter his appearance who has spent his whole life training to be a British secret agent.

TD partners with the CBC to bring the five nominees for the award to schools across Canada as a part of the Kids Book Club. You can read about the other nominated authors and books and check out the entries from the winning schools on the Kids Book Club website.

Slade's earlier book Dust was awarded a Governor General's Award for Children's Literature in 2001. He currently lives and writes in Saskatoon
