Author and filmmaker David Bezmozgis recently received a rather extraordinary present for his 37th birthday — he was named to the New Yorker's top 20 most promising novelists under 40 list.
Bezmozgis was born in Riga, Latvia, and came to Canada with his family when he was six as part of a larger Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union. This history provides a rich, and largely unexplored, backdrop for his work. He discusses his literary career and this latest accolade with Matt Galloway, the host of Toronto's Metro Morning.
Bezmozgis was not the only Canadian to make the list. Rivka Galchen, who was born in Toronto, also received the honour.
