First aired on The Current 02/16/10 runs [22:39] As the frustration with some downhill runs reaches a crescendo at the Olympics, we're backsliding today and tracking the ski. It is older than the wheel: a couple of planks created to travel through the snow, evolving over as many as 5,000 years into a mass leisure activity and an elite sport. Along the way, skiing was refined by hunters, by the military, even by the farmers of Telemark, Norway. This, and more, are in a new book called Two Planks and a Passion: The Dramatic History of Skiing. Author Roland Huntford appeared on the Current to discuss his book.
