Markham industrial incident leaves 1 dead, 1 seriously injured
Lift was elevated to about 7 metres when it toppled over at new development site
One person has died and another was rushed to hospital in serious condition after an industrial accident in Markham this morning.
An industrial lift flipped onto its side at the site of the new Downtown Markham development, at the intersection of Birchmount Road and Enterprise Boulevard, according to police. The lift was raised to about seven metres and was positioned at the northwest corner of a new building when it toppled over.
It was not immediately clear if both workers were inside the lift's carriage at the time.
An air ambulance was called to the scene.
The Ministry of Labour is currently on site investigating. It's not clear what caused the lift to overturn.
York police said the intersection will be closed for at least several hours.
An air ambulance also responded to a separate industrial incident this morning in Caledon. According to Ornge, a man in his 50s was crushed by a 226-kilogram beam. There is no word on the man's condition.
