Also known as Lamb's Lettuce, mâche lettuce is a delicate and tender lettuce that has a tangy, nutty flavour. It comes in small clusters, with smooth, green leaves, and makes a great substitute for either arugula or baby spinach in salad dishes.
Mâche lettuce also has high levels of vitamins B and C. In fact, just one 150 gram serving contains almost 95% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C. On top of that, because of it's high vitamin B content, mâche lettuce has natural anti-fatigue, anti-stress and anti-oxidant properties. This makes mâche lettuce particularly great for winter salads, since we tend to suffer from a lack of vitamins B and C during the winter.
When selecting mâche lettuce, keep and eye out for deep green, crisp and velvety leaves. Avoided lettuce that's wilted or yellowish in color, as that means it's not fresh. Because it's rather delicate, it's best consumed within 3-4 days, and be sure not to put it in the bottom of your shopping cart because it's easily crushed!
