Districts Profile:
This northwestern Vancouver riding juts into the Strait of Georgia and is bordered on the north by English Bay, the east in part by Arbutus, Burrard and Camosun streets, and on the south by the North Arm of the Fraser River. The University of British Columbia is here, along with Camosun Bog, the CNIB complex, and the beaches and parks along English Bay. Professional and educational services are the main moneymakers, and they make quite a lot: At $98,435, Vancouver-Point Grey has the province's fourth-highest average family income. Unemployment is low, at 6.1 per cent, and education rates are B.C.'s highest, with 51.4 per cent of adults holding a university degree. Immigrants account for 29 per cent of the population
Political History:
The incumbent in Vancouver-Point Grey is Premier Gordon Campbell of the Liberals. In 2001 he polled nearly three times the votes of the runner-up, Varya Rubin of the Greens. Campbell has been here since 1996, when, as the incumbent from Vancouver-Quilchena, he defeated New Democrat Jim Green by 1,563 votes. Preceding Campbell was Darlene Marzari of the New Democrats, who beat Liberal Barry Burke by more than 3,000 votes in 1991. Before that, this was a two-member district. MLAs included Garde Gardom (1966-86) and Pat McGeer (1962-86) – both of whom started their careers as Liberals before turning Socred in 1975 – as well as eventual Progressive Conservative Prime Minister Kim Campbell of the Socreds (1986-89), Darlene Marzari (1986-96), and New Democrat Tom Perry (1989-91).
In 2001, the voter turnout in Vancouver-Point Grey was 65.8 per cent – the seventh lowest in the province.
