Districts Profile:

This northeastern Surrey riding is bordered on the north by the Fraser River, on the east by 196th Street, on the south by 64th and 80th avenues, and on the west by 152nd Street. Barnston Island is in the northeast corner of the riding. Retail trade and manufacturing are the major industries here, contributing to an average family income of $70,212 – somewhat above the B.C. norm. Unemployment is a quite low 6.7 per cent. Immigrants account for 34 per cent of the population; South Asians make up 15.7 per cent, for the province's seventh highest such percentage. At 59,081, this riding has the province's third-highest overall population.

Political History:

The incumbent in Surrey-Tynehead is Liberal Dave S. Hayer. In 2001 Hayer collected four times as many votes as the runner-up, Barry Bell of the NDP. Preceding Hayer (when most of this area was in the old Surrey-Cloverdale riding), was Liberal Bonnie McKinnon, who won her seat in 1996 by defeating the previous Liberal incumbent, Ken Jones, in the nomination battle, and then enjoying a 5,466-vote margin over New Democrat Charan Gill in the general election. Jones had also defeated Gill in 1991. Before that the NDP and the Socreds battled for this turf, which was part of the old Surrey riding. New Democrat Ernie Hall was the MLA from 1966-75, before being unseated by Socred (and eventual premier) Bill Vander Zalm. In 1979, however, this became a two-member riding, and both Hall and Vander Zalm were elected. Four years later the Socreds got both seats, with wins by (eventual premier) Rita Johnston and Bill Reid. In 1986 the Surrey riding was split up, with Reid winning in what became called Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale.

In 2001, the voter turnout in Surrey-Tynehead was 72.3 per cent – just above the provincial average.
