Districts Profile:

This large, elongated, mountainous riding takes in that part of Prince George north of 5th Avenue, and then stretches northward beyond Ware to the headwaters of the Finlay River. The southern half of the riding is bisected by highways 97 and 39. This is a working-class riding where pulp mills and other manufacturing is the major industry, with retail a distant second. The average family income is a high $71,757, but unemployment, at 10.8 per cent, is fairly high as well. Only 9 per cent of the population are immigrants. Another 9 per cent are First Nations people.

Political History:

The incumbent in Prince George North is Liberal Pat Bell, the minister of state for mining. In 2001 Bell's margin over runner-up Brian Llewellyn of the NDP was more than 4-to-1. Bell's immediate predecessor here was Paul Ramsey of the New Democrats, who was elected in 1991 with a 962-vote victory over Liberal John Mangan and re-elected in 1996 after a 914-vote win over Liberal Bob Viergever. John Heinrich of the Socreds was MLA from 1979-86; the NDP's Lois Boone held the seat from 1986-91.

In 2001, the voter turnout in Prince George North was 71.8 per cent – just above the provincial average.
