Districts Profile:
Located in east-central B.C., this riding runs along the spine of the Rockies from around Mount Robson Provincial Park in the south to beyond Aleza Lake in the north, and includes that part of Prince George east of Ospika and Foothills boulevards and Highway 16 and south of 5th Avenue. Outside of Prince George, the population here is mainly centred in a few villages located along the Robson Valley. Much of the economy depends on forestry, while manufacturing and agriculture are important, as is tourism. The average family income – $55,554 – is low for B.C., while the unemployment rate of 13.4 per cent is the province's eight-highest. Just 10 per cent of the people here are immigrants, while 13 per cent are First Nations – the seventh-highest proportion in the province.
Political History:
The incumbent in Prince George-Mount Robson is Liberal Shirley Bond, the deputy premier and minister of health services. In 2001 she received three times the votes of the runner-up, Todd Whitcombe of the NDP. Bond was preceded here by New Democrat Lois Boone, who was first elected in Prince George North in 1986 (beating a Socred by 526 votes). Boon was then elected into this riding in 1991 – unseating Socred Bruce Strachan by 1,616 votes – and was again elected in '96, with a 949-vote win over Liberal Lorna Dittmar. Until his ouster, Strachan had been MLA here since the riding was formed in 1979.
In 2001, the voter turnout in Prince George-Mount Robson was 68.8 per cent – somewhat below the provincial average.
