District Profile:
This primarily suburban riding is bordered on the south by the Fraser River, on the west in part by Blue Mountain Street and Gatensbury Road, on the north partly by Guildford Way and Brookmount Road, and on the east largely by the Coquitlam River. Substantial industry – mainly involving lumber and plywood products – exists along the southern waterfront. The average family income here is $70,338 – somewhat above the B.C. average – while unemployment is a low 6.7 per cent. Immigrants form nearly a third of the population, while visible minorities make up 27 per cent of the community. One in five people here is of Chinese extraction.
Political History:
The incumbent in Coquitlam-Maillardville is Liberal Richard Stewart. He gained office in 2001, collecting twice the votes of the NDP's Ken Landgraff. Landgraff's defeat spelled the end of a long NDP reign: New Democrat John Cashore won here in 1986, '91 and '96. From 1979-83, New Democrat Norm Levi was MLA; he lost the 1983 election by 39 votes to the Social Credit Party's John Parks.
In 2001, voter turnout in Coquitlam-Maillardville was 71.4 per cent – just above the provincial average.
