Bruce McKinley's (from Geekrunner)  tips for extending your computer's life (for PC's and Macs)

1. Backup your data at least monthly, if not more frequently. All computer shops carry inexpensive backup drives for both Macs & PCs.
2. Don't leave your computer on overnight - - shutting it down saves electricity and wear-and-tear on your system, plus refreshes the system upon reboot.
3. Update your software. On a Mac, go to "Software Update" under the Apple menu. On a PC, open Internet Explorer and go to Tools --> Windows Update.
4. Minimize heat build-up - - keep laptops off pillows & duvets, and keep desktops out of cupboards and other enclosed spaces. Air circulation is key.
5. Keep it clean - - don't stack things on your computer and ensure its as dust-free as possible.
